Biography/History
The School of Education is the oldest of the professional schools at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Wisconsin State Normal School (Milwaukee) was founded in 1885 as a
teacher training institution. It was renamed Milwaukee State Teachers College in 1927 and
authorized to grant baccalaureate degrees. In 1951 the institution became the Wisconsin
State College, Milwaukee, and at that time consisted of seven divisions, five in education.
In 1956 the State Legislature merged the college with the University of Wisconsin Extension
Division to form the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Masters degrees in education have
been granted since 1945 and a doctoral program in urban education began in the fall of
1969.
