The following information is taken from Frank A. Cassell, J. Martin Klotsche, and Frederick
I. Olson, The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee: A Historical
Profile, 1885-1992 (Milwaukee: UWM Foundation, Inc., 1992):
The School of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee originated in the Fall of
1963 as a Division of Nursing under the School of Nursing of the UW-Madison. The School
had been approved by the Board of Regents in December 1965, and by the Wisconsin Board of
Nursing in April 1966, and secured full accreditation from the National League for Nursing
in 1969.
In addition to the Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in nursing, the School of Nursing has
offered a Master of Science (M.S.) in nursing since 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree
(Ph.D.) in nursing since 1985.
In 2003, the name of the School was changed to the College of Nursing, in order to "give
appropriate recognition to the reputation and increasing complexity of the school and
enhance the ability to recruit and retain highly qualified students and faculty."
The College occupies Cunningham Hall, a ten-story building completed in 1973 specifically
for the College of Nursing and incorporating the latest audio-visual and learning/teaching
equipment and facilities. It was designed for optimal interaction among faculty, staff,
students, and members of the community.
