Isaac Israel Hayes Arctic Drawings Collection, 1859-1869

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains 50 sketches and paintings, mostly of Arctic scenes such as glaciers, icebergs, and seascapes. While only a few of the pieces are signed, such as the ones by Hans Hendrik, an Inuit guide, very few of these drawings have the artist's signature or date. However, most of them are likely by Isaac Israel Hayes, and would date from either the Hayes led expedition to the Arctic in 1860-1861, or the expedition led by the artist William Bradford in 1869. The collection may also contain works by other members of the expeditions, such as William Bradford.
