Scope and Content Note

This collection contains materials from the Milwaukee Road Engineering Department such as Bridge Inspections, consisting of a list of bridges needing to be renewed; Cascade Mining Company; Clearwater-Elk River Extension, including topography reports by the locomotive engineer; Corporate History of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Co. and Subsidiary Companies, which was issued by Chief Engineer Charles Loweth as part of a mandatory Interstate Commerce Commission requirement; Force Reports on Jobs, which lists the name of the foreman, his present location and the task worked on; Injury Reports that discuss various highway accidents in the Madison, Wisconsin Division; the correspondence of F.W. Kimball and Charles Lapham; the Milwaukee Freeway Project, including several drawings of the grade separations; and North Avenue and Milwaukee Grade Separation Projects, concerning correspondence and drawings with the companies affected by the project.

The Engineering Department records also include Piles, which discuss beams providing foundations for structures in the Everett, Washington area; Project Milwaukee, a civic program devised by the Milwaukee Road in the 1960s that focused on the Road’s relocation of facilities in Fowler Street Yard, and the construction of a new passenger station and post office; Rail Replacement in ICC Track #1280, which is located in Milwaukee between Center and Burleigh Streets; Reconnaissance, which contains various land survey reports by Milwaukee Road engineers in the northwestern part of the United States; Standard Procedure Manual, a guide for the entire department on topics such as drainage, rail classification, bridge inspection and safety; System Clearances, with statistics about the maximum dimensions of loads handled on certain routes; Track Elevation on the South Side of Milwaukee, with a list of property affected by the grade change; and White Butte, South Dakota, containing analysis of establishing a railroad station in that town.
