Biography/History

John Goadby Gregory was born in Milwaukee on 11 July 1856 to Irish immigrant parents. He was a prominent Milwaukee newspaper editor, historian, and civic leader. He worked for the Milwaukee Sentinel and the Evening Wisconsin as a typesetter, reporter, and editor between 1867 and 1885. He served as both editor and senior editorial writer for the Evening Wisconsin from 1885 to 1918, becoming editor-in-chief in 1905. In 1919 he was named a professor of journalism at Marquette University and served as Secretary of the War History Commission of Wisconsin. He also wrote several books, including History of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1931) and Southeastern Wisconsin (1932). John G. Gregory died in 1947 in Milwaukee.
