Biography/History

John R. Kalwitz was born in Milwaukee on 7 July 1941. He graduated from Rufus King High School in 1960. Kalwitz also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1965 and later studied law at Marquette University. He was elected to the Common Council in 1968, defeating incumbent James Maslowski and becoming one of its youngest members at age 26. Kalwitz served eight terms as Alderman, representing Milwaukee’s 2nd District and either chaired or served on many committees during his tenure. He also served three four-year terms as President of the Common Council, 1984-1988, 1992-1996, and 1996-2000. Kalwitz retired from the Common Council in 2000 and later moved to Nevada.
