Organized in 1840, the Town of Wauwatosa came from territory of the Town of
Milwaukee, township seven north, range twenty east. The new Town’s territory
remained static until about 1900. Then the City of Milwaukee annexed surrounding
territories, confining the Town to an area bordering the Town of Granville to the
north, Greenfield to the South, the City and Town of Milwaukee to the east and
Waukesha to the west. In 1892, the Village of Wauwatosa was incorporated from part
of the Town of Wauwatosa, which later became the City of Wauwatosa in 1897. The City
of Wauwatosa annexed the majority of the Town of Wauwatosa in 1952-1954. The cities
of Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, and West Allis annexed the remainder of the Town of
Wauwatosa by 1956.
