Abstract: Case files of the Wisconsin Equal
Rights Division. Correspondence and legal materials concerning cases of discrimination that
were adjudicated in court, 1967-1993, together with files on all incidents of discrimination
initiated with the division, 1945-1967, regardless of whether they were litigated outside
the agency. Beginning in 1994, only those cases which are appealed to court are retained.
The series concerns complaints and cases of racial discrimination in housing, public
accommodations, and employment, as well as cases based on gender, age, and religion. Files
variously include the original complaint and determination, case information sheets, briefs,
correspondence, transcripts of proceedings, case summaries, findings of fact, orders,
dissents, and other related information. A.O. Smith, American Motors Corp., Briggs and
Stratton, and Wisconsin Telephone Co. are among the respondents. Also included is case
correspondence, 1963-1968, of the Governor's Commission on Human Rights and a 10-year
summary of commission cases.
