Abstract: Papers of William Lighty, a pioneer in the field of adult education who was on the administrative staff of the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin from 1906 to 1937 and exerted a marked influence on its development. The bulk of the collection derives from the period between 1910 and 1930 and is composed of Lighty's personal, business, and professional correspondence; his articles and speeches; and records of the Extension Division. His papers for the period prior to 1906 contain material on his early education and teaching experiences in Pennsylvania; on his interest in the ethical culture movement, particularly in St. Louis; and on a summer camp for boys which he operated near Spooner, Wisconsin. On tape are his recollections of his work in the Extension Division.
