Abstract: Records of the Wisconsin affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (WCLU), originally active during the 1930s, and reestablished in 1953 as a direct response to the abuse of civil liberties during the McCarthy era. Included are correspondence of the WCLU and of its predecessor, the Wisconsin chapter of the ACLU; organizational papers, minutes, financial records, activities files, subject files, and papers of WCLU member and general legal counsel, William Gorham Rice, Jr. Documentation of civil liberties activity in Wisconsin from 1940 until 1953 is fragmentary.
