Abstract:
Artificial collection of panoramic photographs of camps and other locations related to the military. Photographs span from pre-World War I to post-World War II, and are mostly black and white. Most of the images are identified by camp or fort and a general date. Unidentified images include several photographs of camps or bases without a name, as well as a photograph of a celebration of the end of the war. World War I images from Europe include a battlefield and surrounding areas in German-held France and Germany. There are three images of Luxemburg, one of which is a color print, the rest are black and white photographs. Also included is a photograph from China, featuring American barracks there before World War II.

Biography/History

This is an artificial collection of panoramic photograph, including images separated out from manuscript collections and images from the GAR Memorial Hall. The panoramic photograph collection has been separated into seven collections: Pre-World War I, World War I, Interwar, World War II, Post-World War II, Veterans Organizations and Camps and Locations.

Scope and Content Note

Images in this collection have been arranged alphabetically by fort or camp name. Due to the varying sizes of panoramic photographs, images of one location may be present in several different folders.

Most of these images are identified with the name, state and year the photograph was taken. Several images also have written notes about the functions of various buildings or where different regiments were stationed within the camp. The panoramic photographs are in alphabetical order by the name of the camp. For ease of use, the finding aid has been organized by state, then camp.

Miscellaneous camps and locations include unnamed camps, and an end-of-war celebration in Chicago. Also included are photographs from overseas, both Europe and Asia. Several photographs from Europe feature France and Germany from World War I, many with short captions about military actions taken in the surrounding area. Featured areas include Belleau Wood and Argonne, as well as a few towns in Germany. An image of American barracks in China features the barracks and some of the surrounding Tientsin, China.

Related Material

Many regimental photographs often feature the name of the camp or fort where they were taken as well as a distinctive landmark of that location. For images of regiments taken at camps, see the Pre-World War I, World War I, Interwar, World War II and Post-World War II collections.
