Abstract:
Papers and photographs of Col. Leo M. Jackson, a Regular Army and Wisconsin National Guard officer, who served with the 32nd Infantry, 119th Machine Gun Battalion in World War I. The collection includes personnel records, background information on the 119th Machine Gun Battalion, orders and memoranda from the American Expeditionary Force, including extensive field orders from October 1918 military operations, intelligence reports, and battalion rosters. After the war Jackson also served as an officer in the 128th Infantry of the Wisconsin National Guard, which is documented by training materials and inspection reports.

Biography/History

Leo Jackson was born in Neillsville, Wisconsin on December 18, 1889. He became a private in Co. A of the 3rd Wisconsin National Guard Regiment in 1907 and later attended Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. During the First World War he was a captain attached to the headquarters of the 119th Machine Gun Battalion, which was part of the 32nd Infantry Division (made up of Wisconsin and Michigan National Guard members). After the war, in addition to his duties as a Colonel of the 128th Infantry of the Wisconsin National Guard, he was a retail businessman in Neillsville. In 1935 he began work for the Wisconsin Adjutant General where he was an administrator and inspector. During World War II he was a procurement officer for the state selective service organization and after the war he did a tour of duty in Japan and Korea. In 1948 he was appointed adjutant of the King Grand Army Home and also served for a time as the acting commandant. Later Jackson was the business manager of the Grand Army Home until his retirement in 1961. He died in 1970.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Leo M. Jackson are divided into three series, Military Service, Personal, and Photographs.

Military Service (1911-1946) constitutes the bulk of the collection. The World War I sub-series includes Jackson's personnel records, background information about the 32nd Infantry Regiment and the 119th Machine Gun Battalion, orders and memoranda of the American Expeditionary Force, 1918 to 1919, including general orders, field orders, and intelligence memoranda, and battalion commendations and rosters. The Wisconsin National Guard sub-series includes training materials and inspection reports by Jackson and others, and includes a letter commending the quality of Jackson's inspections by Gen. Paul Clemens of the Wisconsin National Guard, and a blueprint of the officer's mess at Camp Williams, Wisconsin. Oversized military training materials include a chart and a protractor used in determining distance traveled while marching.

Personal (1956-1963) includes two post cards from military comrades and Photographs (1907-circa1960s) includes a 1907 photograph of Co. A of the 3rd Wisconsin National Guard Infantry with Jackson indicated, 1936 and 1939 photographs of Jackson in his Wisconsin National Guard officer's uniform, and a circa1960s photograph of Jackson in civilian clothing with two military comrades.
