Papers, 1858, 1907-1978, consisting primarily of correspondence and manuscripts of published and unpublished works, of August Derleth, one of Wisconsin's most prominent and prolific writers. Derleth spent almost his entire life in the small Wisconsin town of Sauk City and wrote about its history and its personalities in his Sac Prairie Saga, a nearly fifty-volume sequence of novels, journals, lyric poems, short stories, and miscellaneous prose which comprises one of the major works of American regional literature. Derleth was also a devotee of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the master of twentieth century weird fantasy, and a major contributor to the “Cthulhu Mythos,” a body of supernatural and science fiction works originated by Lovecraft.

Biography/History
August W. Derleth was born to William Julius and Rose Louise (Volk) Derleth in Sauk City, Wisconsin, on February 24, 1909. Educated in local parochial and public schools, Derleth attended the University of Wisconsin and received a B.A. in English in 1930. Soon after graduating, he began work as an associate editor for Fawcett Publications in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but after six months returned to Sauk City to pursue a career as a free-lance writer. In 1943 he became engaged to Marcia Lee Masters, the daughter of author Edgar Lee Masters, but eventually broke off the engagement and ten years later married Sandra Winters. The couple had two children: April Rose, born in 1954, and Walden William, born in 1956. The Derleths were divorced in 1959, but both children continued to live with their father. Thereafter Derleth's household consisted of himself, his daughter and son, and his parents.
Derleth began to write at age thirteen, later recalling that “I was convinced even at that age that I could write tripe as good as that I had been reading.” When he was fifteen Derleth sold his first piece of work, a fantasy story entitled “Bat's Belfry,” and saw its publication in the May 1926 issue of Weird Tales magazine. By the mid 1930s he was able to support himself comfortably by selling what he called his “tripe,” primarily detective and supernatural stories. Later he sold book reviews and other short pieces as well. At the same time he began to write works which he intended to be more serious, notably his Sac Prairie Saga and his “Cthulhu Mythos” fantasy works. Derleth's lifetime literary output was by any standards enormous: he wrote over one hundred and fifty books and several thousand stories and articles which appeared in more than five hundred different magazines and newspapers. But Derleth was not a hack nor a formula writer, for his style was as varied as his output prodigious. He authored novels, novellas, short stories, juvenile books, pastiches, poems, journals, articles, histories, and biographies, and he wrote in every genre from fantasy and science fiction to nature poetry, historical fiction, and biography. Besides being a writer, Derleth was also an editor, anthologist, and publisher.
Derleth's most significant contribution to American literature was his Sac Prairie Saga. In this sequence of nearly fifty volumes, which combined historical and contemporary novels, novellas, short stories, journal extracts, lyric poetry, and miscellaneous prose, Derleth told the story of a century of life, nature, and change in a fictionalized portrayal of his home town. In 1938 Derleth was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to support his work. The Sac Prairie Saga, together with the Wisconsin Saga, a series of historical novels set in other parts of the state, is considered among the major works of American regional literature.
Derleth was equally well known for his writings in the supernatural, fantastic, and macabre. From the beginning of his writing career Derleth was a devotee of Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), the master of twentieth-century American weird fantasy. At an early age Derleth became one of a number of Lovecraft protégés who, as contributors or would be contributors to Weird Tales, carried on extensive correspondence with Lovecraft and each other about their work. Lovecraft was their mentor. He devoted much time and effort to encouraging his youthful correspondents and helping them to succeed as writers of fantasy. Many did, not the least of whom was Derleth, and Lovecraft's imprint is clearly noticeable in most of their subsequent writings. Beginning with Lovecraft, the members of this circle developed a body of fiction known collectively as the “Cthulhu Mythos,” a group of stories that had as a common background a complex mixture of science fiction and supernatural elements. Derleth contributed more to the Cthulhu material than anyone except Lovecraft himself, and in the period following Lovecraft's death, by encouraging other writers to develop it further, he was primarily responsible both for its continued growth and for the widespread acceptance and fame that Lovecraft posthumously achieved.
When Lovecraft died in 1937, Derleth and fellow author Donald Wandrei decided that Lovecraft's stories should be saved from the ephemeral world of magazine literature. Obtaining the rights to a number of Lovecraft's stories, Derleth and Wandrei compiled an anthology of previously published Lovecraft works, titling it The Outsider and the Other. But when no publisher would risk printing the lengthy manuscript, Derleth and Wandrei scraped money together, formed their own publishing company, Arkham House, and in 1939 published the volume on their own. Arkham House was originally intended only as an outlet for Lovecraft works, but Derleth and Wandrei quickly recognized the need for a quality fantasy publisher; they therefore decided to publish as much of the outstanding literature in the field as they could. In addition to several more Lovecraft anthologies and five volumes of Lovecraft letters, Arkham House eventually published fantasy and science fiction works by Derleth, Wandrei, Robert Bloch, Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber, Clark Ashton Smith, A.E. Van Vogt, and others.
In the early 1940s Derleth assumed sole proprietorship of Arkham House, and from then on he ran operations almost singlehandedly. He devoted his time to the company, subsidized its operations with approximately $50,000 of his own money, and made his home the business's office and warehouse. But even more importantly, after Lovecraft's death Derleth became the new center of correspondence and acknowledged master within an ever growing circle of fantasy writers and aficionados, all of whom came to rely on Derleth for advice and sound editorial judgment much as Derleth and others had relied on Lovecraft earlier. Derleth's acquaintance with many young writers and his ability to recognize and cultivate talent meant that Arkham House was the first to publish many authors who later became well known. Although Arkham House was never a profitable concern, Derleth's devotion, efforts, talents, and financial support ensured that the business would not follow into insolvency and bankruptcy the other small fantasy publishing houses set up in the 1940s. In 1945 Derleth began publishing additional works under two new imprints: Mycroft and Moran, which specialized in detective fiction; and Stanton and Lee, which published poetry and Derleth's works for juveniles. Three years after Derleth's death Arkham House was finally incorporated and it continues today to be prominent among the publishers of fantasy and the macabre.
Derleth was never one to follow a single interest to the exclusion of all others, nor did the solitary nature of a writer's life lead him to become a closeted or solitary individual; instead, Derleth's life was one constant hum of activity. Besides his extensive writing and publishing activities, Derleth carried on a voluminous daily correspondence and devoted significant amounts of his time to the appreciation and observation of nature. He took daily walks through the countryside and noted all he saw, expanding on his observations, as well as on his other daily activities, in his “Sac Prairie Journal” and often finding in his notes inspiration for poems and stories. Derleth took a sort of vacation every May to spend his days gathering morel mushrooms and communing with nature during the season of new birth. Description of nature was one of the hallmarks of Derleth's serious writings. In addition, for nine years Derleth was a contributing editor to Outdoors Magazine, and between 1960 and 1963 he edited and published his own magazine of nature poetry, Hawk and Whippoorwill. In 1948 and 1949 he published The Arkham Sampler, a quarterly magazine of fantasy stories, and from 1941 until the mid-1960s he was literary editor for the Madison (Wisconsin) Capital Times. Derleth lectured at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1939 to 1943 and from 1958 to 1971, and he occasionally gave special lectures elsewhere. He was the director of the Sauk City Board of Education for six years and was always active and popular among local youth. In addition to his professional and civic activities, Derleth found time to collect comics -- he claimed to have the world's largest selective collection --and to read, swim, and play chess. Extraordinarily energetic, unusually versatile, the possessor of an ever fertile imagination, Derleth never became bored or distracted with his writer's life and to his last days he never slackened his pace or lost his inspiration. He died of a heart attack in his Sauk City home on July 4, 1971.

Part 1 (Wis Mss WO, Micro 923, Audio 1718A, PH 4975): Original Collection, 1858, 1907-1978, 199269.6 cubic feet (124 boxes and 20 records center cartons), 6 reels of microfilm (35 mm), 2 audio recordings, and 0.3 cubic feet of visual materials (1 archives box and 1 oversize folder) The Papers are primarily composed of correspondence between Derleth and hundreds of his friends, acquaintances, associates, and readers; and of manuscripts of many of Derleth's published and unpublished writings. The collection spans Derleth's entire adult life and reflects on all aspects of his writing career and his private life. Besides his will, however, there are few personal records. The collection is arranged in eight series: Correspondence, Manuscripts, Subject Files, Arkham House Business Papers, H.P. Lovecraft Materials, Published Materials, Miscellaneous Restricted Materials, and Correspondence-Additions. CORRESPONDENCE Nearly half of this collection consists of correspondence. Most of these letters are ones that Derleth received from family, friends, acquaintances, confidants, other authors, hopeful writers, publishers, readers, and fans; the rest are original Derleth letters addressed to Samuel Colehour, Edna Meudt, Barbara Pence, J. Vernon Shea, Mary Stiver, Inez Weaver, and his fiances, family, and relatives, and a smaller number of carbon copies of letters to other persons. All correspondence is arranged in one alphabetical file by writer's or recipient's name. Cross references between related files and notes explaining the name changes or subdivisions of certain publishing houses are interfiled in appropriate locations throughout the series. It should be noted that no H.P. Lovecraft correspondence is to be found in this series: instead, it has been grouped together with other Lovecraft documents under H.P. Lovecraft Materials. The contents list below notes only correspondents with 5 or more letters. Letters from the other correspondents are included in the proper alphabetical locations. The content of Derleth's correspondence ranges from discussions of business matters and inquiries about writing and publishing to intimate revelations of personal activities and billets-doux. In general, the letters tend to be friendly or personal and all are revealing of both the writer and the recipient. Almost all are lengthy and most are a part of a series of letters written over a period of months or years. Letters which deal primarily with business topics generally relate to the publication of Derleth's stories and novels or to Derleth's compilation and publication of other authors' works. More personal correspondence includes inquiries from readers, fans, and prospective writers who usually ask for Derleth's opinions and comment on his and other authors' works; series of letters from prominent writers, associates, and acquaintances who trade information with Derleth about their writing and publishing activities; and files of intimate correspondence between Derleth and his fiances, family, and close friends. Because Derleth was forthright, uninhibited, and never reluctant to express his satisfaction with his successes or acknowledge his short-comings, his letters paint an especially revealing portrait of Derleth the man and the writer. In his letters he generally discusses the background, progress, meaning, significance, and failings of his works and talks about his philosophy, opinions, acquaintances, present and past experiences, and public and private life. Derleth's openness seems to have inspired similar traits among his correspondents as well, and many of their letters therefore have additional importance for what they reveal about the characters and the minds of the individuals who wrote them. MANUSCRIPTS Notes, drafts, revisions, final copies, and proof sets for a number of Derleth's (and other persons') writings are included in this series. Most of these pieces are typewritten, a substantial number on the backs of routine correspondence and printed letters that Derleth received from individuals, businesses, and organizations. The manuscripts are arranged alphabetically, either by title or author, within five groups: Prose, Poetry, Notebooks, “Sac Prairie Journal,” and Miscellany. Prose consists of manuscripts of over three hundred of Derleth's short stories, novels, and articles. Since Derleth published in so many different magazines and sometimes wrote under pseudonyms, it is not clear whether all the short story manuscripts in this group were published: most were, however, as were all of the book length pieces. The few drafts that are dated cover the years between 1924 and 1970. Copies of the book reviews that Derleth wrote for the Madison (Wisconsin) Capital Times during the 1960s have been placed at the end of this group of manuscripts. Manuscripts of Derleth's poetry include collections arranged by Derleth, most of which were eventually published; individual finished poems, alphabetically organized by title or first line; and handwritten fragments of poems that Derleth never completed or else completed elsewhere. Manuscripts of poems written by other persons but edited or published by Derleth can be found under Manuscripts - Miscellany - Editorial Works. Additional drafts and fragments of Derleth's poetry are written in the backs of the 184 small pocket notebooks which make up the third group of manuscripts. Derleth carried these notebooks during his nature walks and recorded in them his observations as well as his thoughts and sudden inspirations. These booklets were the primary source for much of Derleth's nature and regional writings. Derleth often expanded on his notes in the “Sac Prairie Journal” --his personal record of the incidents that occurred in his private life and in his community. Derleth kept this journal faithfully, making daily entries between 1935 and 1970, and used substantial portions of it as the basis for Village Daybook, Wisconsin Country, Walden West, and other works. There is a twenty year restriction on access to parts of the journal. The rest of Derleth's manuscripts are grouped under Miscellany. Included are well organized research notes, clippings, and transcripts of original documents that Derleth used in writing his biographies of Zona Gale and Nelson Dewey; manuscripts that were sent to Derleth for inclusion in The Arkham House Sampler, Hawk and Whippoorwill, Fire and Sleet and Candlelight, New Poetry Out of Wisconsin, and the unpublished “Wisconsin Fiction,” together with pertinent correspondence; additional manuscripts sent to Derleth for criticism or for inclusion in his other anthologies and magazines; and photocopies of the dedications inscribed in the books which formed Derleth's personal library. Most of the dedications are short and inconsequential, however, and the books in which they were originally written have been separated from the collection. SUBJECT FILE Derleth kept a number of separate files of miscellaneous materials. These files, together with biographical and bibliographical materials extracted from the rest of the collection, comprise the Subject File. A microfilm copy of Derleth's collection of Clippings Concerning Comics forms the largest part of this series. Those clippings that relate to a specific author or comic strip are arranged alphabetically by the author's name; the rest of the clippings concern several authors or comics in general and are arranged chronologically. The majority of the clippings are from Editor and Publisher magazine. There are also a number of original comic strips clipped from old newspapers, some dating back to the first decade of this century and one to the 1850s. Derleth's collection of comics has been separated from the collection and placed in the Iconographic Collection of the State Historical Society. Other materials in the Subject File include a copy of Derleth's will; very early manuscript fragments; reviews of Derleth books; letters and speeches by Derleth about community affairs; copy for the dust jackets of various Derleth and Arkham House books; and clippings and biographical information about Derleth. ARKHAM HOUSE BUSINESS PAPERS Bills, customer orders, copies of invoices, purchase orders, and some correspondence -- all related to the distribution and sale of Arkham House publications -- are arranged chronologically by month within this series. Because Arkham House was not an incorporated business and was never thought of as a money-making concern, Derleth did not compile annual reports or keep precise financial records. These business papers are therefore the only records of Arkham House's operations and sales. Unfortunately, most of the pre-1963 materials were destroyed when this collection was originally processed, so substantially complete records survive only for the years between 1963 and 1970. Customer orders that were part of personal letters are filed in the Correspondence series, as is most of Derleth's correspondence with authors, printers, and distributors about matters relating to the acceptance, printing, and sale of Arkham House volumes. Additional related correspondence may be found under Manuscripts-Miscellany-Editorial Works. H.P. LOVECRAFT MATERIALS Derleth corresponded with H.P. Lovecraft and completed, edited, and published many of Lovecraft's works. Derleth therefore amassed a considerable collection of Lovecraft letters, manuscripts, and published works, all of which have been brought together in this series. In addition, there are two subject folders containing Lovecraft biographies and bibliographies. All of Lovecraft's many, lengthy letters to Derleth are included in this series, as are the few extant Derleth replies. There is also a file, arranged alphabetically by recipient, of Lovecraft letters addressed to third parties. Most of this correspondence is on microfilm and the rest has been copied: special permission must be obtained if one wishes to use the original Lovecraft letters. The manuscripts in this series include drafts and proof sets of Lovecraft works, most of which were prepared for publication by Derleth after Lovecraft's death. They are dated 1915-1967 and are arranged alphabetically by title. A folder of individual Lovecraft poems is filed under the title “Poetry.” Published materials include photocopies of magazine stories, works published while Lovecraft was alive, and works compiled, written, or published by Derleth after Lovecraft's death. They range in date from 1919 to 1963 and are also arranged alphabetically by title. Pieces about Lovecraft can be found: elsewhere in the collection, particularly under Manuscripts - Prose, and Manuscripts - Miscellany - Manuscripts By Other Authors. PUBLISHED MATERIALS The published versions of a number of Derleth's works are to be found in the periodicals and volumes which comprise this series. The periodicals include several issues of 318 different magazines and journals which each contain one or more pieces by Derleth. In some instances Derleth wrote under a pseudonym. There are also 32 volumes of works by Derleth and 29 volumes of other persons' works that were published by Arkham House.
: In 2010 the following periodicals listed in the PUBLISHED MATERIALS series were missing: Destiny, 1951-1952; Dragon-Fly, circa 1936; Fantastic Worlds, Summer 1952; Fantasy Fan, 1933-1935; Gargoyle, 1950; Household, April 1942; Leaves, Summer 1937; and Phantagraph, March-April 1937.
RESTRICTED MATERIALS Box 139 contains six packages of material to which access to package 4-6 are restricted. Details are listed in the Administrative/Restriction Information section.
