Abstract:

Minutes of annual meetings, 1953-1957, financial reports, 1944-1956, lists of officers and directors, membership data, and special committee reports of the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers (WSPE). The Wisconsin society was organized in 1943 to advance the interests of professional engineers by promoting favorable legislation, education, public relations, and high ethical standards and practices. The collection includes information on how the aims of the organization are pursued, on its relationship with the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and on the campaign to register all qualified engineers in the state.

The Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers was created as a result of a meeting held in Milwaukee on April 22, 1943 to which all of the registered engineers of Wisconsin were invited. Prior to this time, the Engineering Society of Wisconsin had served as the representative body for the state's registered engineers. At the Milwaukee meeting, a committee was appointed which, during the summer of 1914, drew up a constitution for the proposed WSPE This constitution was adopted and went into effect on January 1, 1944. The details of the organization of the WSPE can be found in Volume 2 of this collection.

The objectives of the WSPE, as set forth in its constitution, were the “...advancement of the public welfare and the professional, social, and economic interests of the Professional Engineer by promotion of education, legislation, and public relations through the establishment of high ethical standards and practices.”

The manner in which the WSPE has pursued its objectives can be traced through an investigation of this collection - particularly the Board of Directors' Minutes, 1943-1957 (Box 1, folders 3-6) and the WSPE General File, 1943-1956 (Box 8, folders 61-69).

It is also possible for the researcher to explore the relationship between the WSPE and the National Society of Professional Engineers through a perusal of the NSPE General File, 1943-1958 (Boxes 4 & 5, folders 24-35). In addition it is possible to investigate the internal functioning of the WSPE by using the various committee reports, meeting data, and officers' correspondence contained in the collection.

Finally, perhaps the most interesting material found in this collection is that which deals with the WSPE's campaign for the registration of all qualified engineers in the state. Most of this material can be found in Box 7 under the folder headings of Registration Board, Registration Law Committee, Registration Promotion Committee, and Surveyors Registration Law Committee.
