Biography/History

This organization developed from the Milwaukee Schoolmasters Club, which later became the Wisconsin Association of Veteran Schoolmen. It was organized in the middle 1930s. In 1949 the members voted to try for statewide organization, and adopted a formal constitution in 1950. The association had no offices, and it had no paid officers. Its purpose was to promote good fellowship among teachers who had served in the armed forces, to guard schools, and to promote beneficial legislation. An undated letter by G. L. Simpson, first president, stated that the immediate aim of the organization was to secure for veterans, who had lost teaching time while in the service, the same retirement benefits as those acquired by those who had not served in the armed forces.
