Scope and Content Note

Petitions for admittance to the Sunnyview Sanatorium, Oshkosh Wisconsin; the Rocky Knoll Sanatorium, Sheboygan Wisconsin; and applications for medical treatment at county expense.

Under the requirements of Wisconsin Statutes of 1905 and subsequent revisions, the applicant was required by file certain papers with the county judge. Most petitions in this series were filed in the Winnebago County Court. Each petition file includes a statement that the applicant was unable to pay the charges for Sanatorium treatment, a physician's report, approval or denial of admission, and discharge papers if applicable. The packet can also include testimony regarding the applicant's condition, correspondence between the Sanatorium and the patient's physician, and if admitted, information treatment.

A number of petitions are for admittance to the Rocky Knoll Sanatorium in Sheboygan that were filed in the Winnebago County Court and the Sheboygan County Court.

This series also includes applications to the county judge for medical treatment at the public charge. Since 1920, under Wisconsin Statutes, Chapter 142, county and local unit officials and physicians were required to make application to the county judge for hospitalization for any person who is brought to their attention needing treatment because of an aliment which can be alleviated and who cannot pay for treatment. Applications include a statement of the patient's financial situation and a physician's report.

Arrangement of the Materials
