Biography/History

The Theatre Advisory Panel is a panel of theatrical experts who advise and make recommendations to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) regarding its theater grant applications. Within the general framework of the NEA's goals, which include fostering and preserving artistic excellence and insuring that the widest possible audience have the opportunity to experience this excellence, the Theatre Program's Advisory Panel attempts to assist the productions, organizations, and personnel which support these overall goals. The notebooks document the role of the federal government in assisting the arts; reveal the types of theater projects which receive assistance; and provide brief overviews of many of the theater groups operating throughout the country.

Scope and Content Note

The notebooks in this collection consist primarily of summaries and grant applications, the latter of which comprise the bulk of the volumes. The grant applications are further subdivided into categories such as professional, short season, and developmental theaters; theater for youth; services to the field; general programs; state art agencies; training; challenge grants; rejected and tabled applications; touring companies; and exchange fellowships.

The notebooks were acquired by theatrical director Alan Schneider, who served as a member of the Theatre Advisory Panel, and a few pages contain brief annotations by him. The notebooks are in chronological order by meeting date.
