Abstract:
Miscellaneous records of stations WCBS, WCBS-FM, and WCBS-TV, the “flagship” stations of the CBS network in New York City (1929-), including broadcast editorials, transcripts, and recordings. Broadcast editorials, which comprise the majority of the collection, chiefly concern issues and events of interest to the metropolitan area, although they also reflect opinion on broader issues such as abortion and decriminalization of marijuana. About half are replies from the general public. Also included are transcripts of WCBS Radio Looks at Television, which featured interviews with such prominent media personalities and critics as Goodman Ace, Roone Arledge, Kenneth A. Cox, Walter Cronkite, Fred W. Friendly, Mark Goodson, Ernest Kinoy, Millard Lampell, Lee Loevinger, Elmer W. Lower, Richard A. R. Pinkham, Hubbell Robinson, Jr., Morley Safer, Ed Sullivan, David Susskind, Harriet Van Horne, Sylvester L. Weaver, Jr., John F. White, Perry Wolff, and David L. Wolper. Two interviews with Susskind are available on tape. Also included is a recording of a Camera Three program, July 4, 1965, with host James MacAndrew and guest Gerald Piel, publisher of Scientific American.

Biography/History

WCBS/WCBS-TV are the “flagship” stations of the Columbia Broadcasting System in New York City. WCBS dates to the purchase of WAHG in January 1939 from Alfred H. Grebe as the first, full-time station of the CBS network. Originally known as WABC, the name was changed to WCBS after the rebirth of NBC's Blue Network as the similarly-named ABC network. Television broadcasting began at the station in 1941.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists almost entirely of transcripts of broadcast editorials, 1965-1978, which are arranged by station: WCBS, WCBS-FM, and WCBS-TV. Although the editorials primarily concern events and issues of interest to metropolitan New York such as local strikes, legislation, and elections, they sometimes reflect opinion on broader issues such as abortion or decriminalization of marijuana. Approximately half of the editorials are the opinions of the CBS stations; the remainder are replies from the general public. Following the WCBS editorials is a short series of scripts from a program entitled WCBS Radio Looks at Television. This program, which aired during 1965 and 1966, includes interviews with such prominent media figures and critics as Goodman Ace, Roone Arledge, Kenneth Cox, Walter Cronkite, Fred W. Friendly, Mark Goodson, Ernest Kinoy, Millard Lampell, Lee Loevinger, Elmer W. Lower, Richard A. R. Pinkham, Hubbell Robinson, Morley Safer, Ed Sullivan, David Susskind, Harriet Van Horne, Sylvester L. Weaver, Jr., John F. White, Perry Wolff, and David L. Wolper. Two interviews with Susskind are available on tape. Also available is a recording of a July 4, 1965, Camera Three television program with host James MacAndrew and guest Gerard Piel, publisher of Scientific American.

Also included is a small group of promotional items pertaining to the station as a whole.
