Abstract:

Papers of Gordon Mitchell, a producer of documentary films and television commercials. The bulk of the collection relates to commercials made by All Scope Pictures, Inc., Mitchell's production company, on behalf of advertising agencies such as Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborn; McCann Erickson; Walter Sausy; and Young & Rubicam. Included in the production files are scripts, correspondence, budgets, contracts, and storyboards for commercials for such nationally-prominent clients as Chrysler Corp., E.J. Gallo Winery, General Electric, General Mills, Kaiser Aluminum, Lucky Lager Brewing Co., Max Factor and Co., Rexall Drug Co., W.A. Schaeffer Pen Co., and Standard Oil of California. Also present are correspondence and notes for three Movietone News features, including one about John F. Kennedy's 1960 California campaign, and fragmentary production files for several proposed television series and special purpose films. Miscellaneous correspondence includes a letter from Darryl F. Zanuck.

Gordon S. Mitchell, producer of special purpose documentary films and television commercials, was born in Los Angeles on March 1, 1907. He attended the University of California at Los Angeles and the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena where he received training as an electrical engineer. In 1931 he began work at Universal Studios as a sound engineer, where he attempted to develop better recording techniques for motion pictures.

In 1933, he joined the staff of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Eventually, he became the manager of its Research Council, a centralized bureau responsible for the cooperative development of new film production equipment and procedural standards within the industry. His work on the Research Council coupled with his status as an Army Reserve officer led to Mitchell's active involvement from the late 1930s through World War II with the motion picture and photographic activities of the Signal Corps. He organized cooperation between the motion picture industry and the Signal Corps in the production of training films, was instrumental in the establishment of a training program for photographic officers, and in 1942 became a commanding officer of a photographic unit serving in the Pacific.

In 1946, Mitchell founded All Scope Pictures, Inc., which produced educational and special purpose films. Among these were training films for the Armed Forces, information films for the State Department, public relations and sales films, theater advertising films, and television commercials. After ten years, the company signed a contract with Twentieth Century Fox to become the Commercial Film Division of Twentieth Century Films, producing all the commercials for the television programs produced by the studio. In the early 1960s, All Scope, Inc. ceased operations. Since that time, Mitchell has devoted his time to commercial property development.

The papers document Mitchell's activities as a producer of television commercials and documentary films. They are organized into four manuscript series: Television Commercials, Television Programs, Motion Pictures, and a Miscellaneous File. The collection also includes films for many of Mitchell's productions, organized into two series: Television Programs, Instructional, and Documentary Films and Television and Motion Picture Theater Commercials. Individual production files relating to some of these films are listed in the contents list below.

TELEVISION COMMERCIALS contains production files for nationally-known products and companies for which All Scope Pictures, Inc., made commercials. Among them are Chrysler Corporation, Gallo, General Electric, General Mills, Kaiser Aluminum, Lucky Lager Beer, Max Factor, Rexall Drugs, Schaeffer Pens, Standard Oil Company, and others.

The files include scripts, correspondence, budgets, contracts, storyboards, budget and production notes, music licenses, and call sheets. This is the most extensive portion of the collection and reveals the advertising techniques of such major firms as Young and Rubicam, Inc., Walker Saussy Advertising, Inc., and McCann Erickson, Inc., which developed commercials that Mitchell produced. Arrangement is alphabetical and chronological thereunder.

TELEVISION PROGRAMS includes research material, synopses, correspondence, scripts, budgets, and cost estimates for several All Scope, Inc. projects, most of which were not produced. Among them are The Lady Yields, a proposed vehicle for Bette Davis and Gary Merrill; Polka Dot the Ocelot, a proposed children's series; and That Others May Live, a program that was to be based upon the exploits of the Air Rescue Service.

The MOTION PICTURE series contains fragmentary documentation for A Letter to Virginia, Movietone News, Opening Night in Hawaii, The Pentagon Case, and Teen-Age Killer. Included in the Movietone News sequence is a promotional film about a 1960 California campaign trip by John F. Kennedy. The Pentagon Case files include correspondence, research materials, and transcripts of three broadcasts by radio commentator Fulton Lewis, Jr. These materials reflect the politically conservative tenor of the proposed movie, which was based on a novel opposing socialism and communism.

The MISCELLANEOUS FILE is composed of an Air Force security file for Mitchell and his crew, who made military training films; general correspondence, including a letter from Mitchell to Darryl F. Zanuck (March 3, 1946) in which Mitchell predicted that television would rival radio broadcasting and suggested that Twentieth Century Fox seriously consider television production; a list of Mitchell's commercials and their production costs; and other miscellany.
