Personal and professional papers of a public relations executive who served as vice-president in charge of account operations for Ruder & Finn, Inc. (1954-1967) and president of the firm's international subsidiary (1963-1967). The bulk of the collection, which includes correspondence, reports, memos, speeches, and research material, is organized into files pertaining to such clients as Union Carbide and American Oil. Also in the client files is material on the firm's extensive voluntary interest in such organization as the Citizen's Committee for a Nuclear Test Ban, the New York Committee to Abolish Capital Punishment, and the AFL-CIO. Papers relating to Ruder & Finn, Inc., consist of correspondence with overseas affiliates. Also part of the collection are speeches and correspondence with various social and professional organizations, primarily the Public Relations Society of America. English

Biography/History
Paul B. Zucker's career in public relations was terminated by an early death; nevertheless, he rose to become executive vice-president of one of the leading public relations firms in the country and a well-known figure in international marketing. He was also noteworthy for the number of contributions which he made to public relations management techniques, primarily in the areas of client programming and the channeling of creative effort.
Paul Zucker was born in New York City in 1924. After service with the Air Force during World War II, he joined the staff of the New York Herald Tribune. In 1947 he left New York to accept a position in the editorial department of the Baltimore News-Post and Sunday American. The following year he began a three year association with the public information department of the American Red Cross. During this same period Zucker resumed his education, graduating from Washington Square College of New York University in 1947. He subsequently did graduate work at Johns Hopkins University and at Columbia University.
In 1952 Zucker completed his transition from journalism to public relations when he joined the infant firm, Ruder & Finn Associates. Two years later the rapidly growing agency promoted him to the position of vice president in charge of account operations. During the late 1950's and early 1960's the firm expanded to serve international public relations needs, and in 1963, while still continuing to occupy his former position, Zucker was named president of Ruder & Finn's subsidiary, Ruder & Finn, International, Inc. In this dual role Zucker was responsible for the majority of contracts undertaken by the agency, either on a voluntary or professional basis.
Membership in a host of public relations associations reveal Zucker as a man of broad professional concerns. At various times during his career he was an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America, a member of the Executives Committee of the Counselors Section of PRSA, an associate member of the Institute of Public Relations, and a member of the International Executives of America. A widely-published author of articles, Zucker frequently spoke to professional organizations both in this country and abroad. He also volunteered his skills to a number of civic and political groups and as a result was named to the boards of the New York Committee to Abolish Capital Punishment and the American Friends of Tel Aviv University.
Zucker died of cancer on August 19, 1967.
Scope and Content Note
Paul Zucker's papers provide documentation of the activities of one of the nation's largest public relations firms in its professional dealings with national and international corporate clients and affiliates and in its volunteer activities in behalf of civic and political groups. Although the depth of documentation varies, the papers provide information on the development of public relations programs and the methods used in soliciting prospective clients. In addition, the papers reflect Zucker's personal and professional interests.
In general, Zucker's papers consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence, memos, reports, speeches, and research material. Although the documentation is generally thorough for the 1960's, only a small portion of the collection relates to Zucker's early career or to the development of Ruder & Finn during the 1950's. The scope of the collection is also limited by Zucker's executive responsibility, and only scattered references to financial matters or to public relations services are to be found.
The RUDER & FINN, INC. records consist chiefly of an alphabetical file of clients and prospective clients. Included in these files are incoming and outgoing correspondence, memos, reports and a limited amount of research material. (The bulk of the research material originally in the collection consisted of printed materials, and much of this was separated from the collection.) This segment of the collection also includes the annual reports of Ruder & Finn -- at the time the only public relations firm to issue public statements of its status. It also includes a limited selection of the weekly reports sent to affiliates in Ruder & Finn's Field Network and a number of memos and reports concerning internal management difficulties. Also included are several pamphlets from the agency's management reprint series. Those written by Zucker, however, are filed with his personal and professional papers. A small amount of material relates to the career of William F. Ruder, one of the founders of the firm.
The RUDER & FINN, INTERNATIONAL, INC., records consist of correspondence with the firm's international affiliates. Chiefly co-ordinative in nature, this correspondence is arranged alphabetically by country, as the affiliates changed upon occasion. Information regarding actual P.R. programs is filed with the client in question in the Ruder & Finn, Inc., records. A small amount of the material in this section deals with Zucker's European business trips in 1956 and 1963.
Zucker's PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL PAPERS includes a subject file of correspondence with the various professional, political and social organizations to which he belonged, speeches (in several cases multiple versions of the same speech are to be found) and appointment registers.
