Abstract:
Papers of Norman Katkov, a journalist and writer of short stories, novels, screenplays, and teleplays. Included are scripts primarily relating to his television work, non-theatrical writings, and correspondence. Although Katkov has written for many dramatic television series, most of these programs are represented only by scripts for single episodes. Larger files are present, however, for Ben Casey (ABC), 87th Precinct (NBC), The Loner (CBS), Maya (NBC), The Outlaws (NBC), Slattery's People (CBS), The Virginian (NBC), and Wanted: Dead or Alive (CBS). Screenplays consist almost entirely of outlines and proposals for unproduced works, the exceptions to this being multiple script drafts for It Happened to Jane (Col., 1959) and Strangers When We Meet (Col., 1960). Non-theatrical writings include a manuscript and related materials for The Fabulous Fanny (1953), Katkov's biography of Fanny Brice; multiple drafts of the novel Eric Mattson (1964); and short stories and columns for the New York World-Telegram and the North American Newspaper Alliance. There are also biographical materials and informative correspondence made up of both incoming and outgoing letters about personal and business matters.

Biography/History

Norman Katkov, writer of short stories, novels, screenplays, and teleplays, was born July 26, 1918, in the Soviet Union, to Hyman and Milia (Radovolsky) Kateekoffsky. He has three brothers: Morris and Harold, both doctors; and Robert, an aerospace technologist. The Kateekoffsky family immigrated to St. Paul, Minnesota, when Norman was two years old. Growing up in St. Paul, Katkov attended public schools, and in 1940 graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism. He then served in the United States Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and was editor of the Fort Snelling Bulletin.

Upon discharge from the Army in 1943, Katkov worked for a time as a reporter for the St. Paul (Minnesota) Pioneer Press and later for the New York World-Telegram. A prolific short story writer, Katkov began to have his short stories published in 1944 by some of the most popular periodicals of the day, among them the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and Esquire. Since that time one or more of his over one-hundred published short stories has appeared in almost every major American feature magazine.

After leaving the World Telegram in 1948, Katkov continued to write short stories and began to try his hand at novels. His first success was Eagle at Eyes, the intense story of an inter-faith love affair, published in 1948. He went on to write A Little Sleep, a Little Slumber (1949), the story of a Jewish immigrant who entered the United States illegally because he wanted to raise a family in America. Katkov's next major effort was an intimate biography of the late Fanny Brice, The Fabulous Fanny, published in 1953. After unsuccessful attempts at two novels and a play, Katkov's most satisfying literary achievement and biggest seller, Eric Mattson, was published in 1964, following three and a half years of painstaking attention. The novel revolves around a dedicated young surgeon who becomes inextricably entwined in love and his efforts to advance surgery and his knowledge of it.

In the late 1950's, after moving to Los Angeles, California, from Westport, Connecticut, Katkov, in an effort to diversify his talents, went to work on several film projects, the most notable of which was It Happened to Jane, starring Doris Day and Jack Lemmon, released in 1959. He also began in the mid-1950's to work steadily as a television writer for several different series, among them Ben Casey (for one episode of which, “A Cardinal Act of Mercy,” Katkov received an Emmy nomination), Slattery's People, The 87th Precinct, Ironside, Maya, and Wanted: Dead or Alive.

Katkov has been married to the former Betty Nelson since August 20, 1951. They have two sons, Richard and William.

Scope and Content Note

The Katkov Papers, 1930-1968, are divided into six sections: Biographical; Correspondence; Short Stories; Novels, Plays, and the Brice Biography; Screenplays; and Television, the largest segment of the collection.

The BIOGRAPHICAL section of the collection includes pages of humorous dialogue between Katkov and his children and wife, and materials related to his years of service in the U.S. Army.

The CORRESPONDENCE files of the collection have been sub-divided into personal and business correspondence and are quite extensive. Each of the two sections is arranged chronologically. From the very beginning of his professional career Katkov retained a copy of nearly every piece of significant outgoing correspondence and also filed nearly all important incoming correspondence. Consequently, there are interesting items revealing the trials and tribulations in selling one's talents to magazine editors, film producers, television executives, and even one's own agent.

The third segment of Katkov's papers consists of manuscripts of his SHORT STORIES. These document the development of the writer from the very early stages of his literary career to the peak of his artistic capabilities. Several have been chosen to be included in anthologies and a few have been published more than once, e.g., “Joey's Ball” and “The Torn Invitation”; some have appeared in foreign language periodicals.

The NOVELS, PLAYS, AND BRICE BIOGRAPHY section of the collection contains extensive manuscripts and rewrites of several Katkov projects, including Eric Mattson, which is documented from its genesis in 1960 to the final 1763-page draft in 1963.

SCREENPLAYS consists almost entirely of outlines and proposals for films never produced. Katkov did, however, see It Happened to Jane (1959) through from start to finish.

TELEVISION, the most lucrative area for Katkov, was able to provide him with steady employment in many on-running series. Included in this part of the collection are scripts, rough drafts, and outlines for various programs from the middle 1950's to the late 1960's. Most numerous are scripts and related papers for episodes of Ben Casey, Slattery's People, and Wanted: Dead of Alive.

Perhaps the most revealing insights into Katkov and his perceptions of his work are to be found in the terse annotations on pages of manuscripts and correspondence, made by Katkov while the collection was being prepared for shipment. Obviously dissatisfied with television and short story writing, though more than competent at both, Katkov was nevertheless not in a financial position to solely pursue his first love, the writing of novels.
