Biography/History
Clark R. Jones, prominent as a television director since 1952, was born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania on April 10, 1920. He received his elementary and high school education in Albany, New York, and his higher education at Northwestern University. In the late 1960's Jones was nominated for Best Television Director of the Year for The Carol Burnett Show, Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall, Annie Get Your Gun, and The Many Faces of Romeo and Juliet. He has also produced such television specials as The Funny Side (September 15, 1971) and Will Rogers, USA (March 9, 1972).
Mr. Jones' awards include the following: T.V. Academy nominations for Best Director (1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1963), Sylvania Television Award (1955), Peabody Award (1952), Look Television Award (1958), and Christopher Award (1953, 1955, 1960).
Scope and Content Note
The Clark Jones Papers, 1952-1970, consist primarily of scripts for television and opera, and are arranged alphabetically, first by series and then by title. The majority of the collection (Boxes 1-13) relates to Jones' career as a director of such television series as The Bell Telephone Hour, The Carol Burnett Show, The Perry Como Show, and The World of Music. There are also twenty-four scripts (Boxes 14-17) for specials which he directed from 1952-1968. These scripts include Annie Get Your Gun,The Lord Don't Play Favorites, and the Tony Awards of 1967 and 1969. Complementing the scripts are cast inventories and photographs.
A script and crew photographs document Jones' 1952 French-language production of Carmen (the first demonstration of closed circuit theater television) at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.
Included in the collection are three films: The Education of Mr. Blandings: Lesson One (1954), and two films of Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall (one 1960 and one undated).
