The majority of the scripts, many of which are annotated, pertain to the radio series The Hedda Hopper Show (NBC), The Mel Blanc Show (CBS), and Let George Do It (Syndicated), and to the television series Fireside Theatre (NBC), Gunsmoke (CBS), I'm the Law (Syndicated), The Rebel (ABC), and Walt Disney Presents (ABC). In 1961 Victor became producer of Dr. Kildare (NBC) and over half of the collection consists of production notes, correspondence, and numerous progressive script drafts for this program. Biography/History
David Victor was born on August 22, 1910 in Odessa, Russia. He emigrated to the United States with his widowed mother, Frieda Victor, in 1922, and settled in New York City, where he attended Morris High School and the Columbia University School of Journalism. On leaving school, he worked first as a staff reporter for the Jersey City, New Jersey, Journal, and then as editor of American Spectator magazine. During this time he also worked as a freelance writer for radio. Radio series for which he has written include Let George Do It, The Hedda Hopper Show, The Joan Davis Show, Molle Mystery Theatre, and Vick's Matinee Theatre.
Mr. Victor progressed into television writing and won two Writers Guild of America nominations for scripts for Gunsmoke (1956-1957) and Restless Gun (1958-1959). From 1960 to 1961, he served as associate producer and consultant on The Rebel. In 1961, Mr. Victor was named associate producer for Dr. Kildare and became full producer midway through the series. In 1965, he was named producer of Man From U.N.C.L.E., and vice president of Arena Productions.
David Victor is the author of, Father's Doing Nicely, which was published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1938. He is married and has two children. The family now resides in Los Angeles, California.
Scope and Content Note
The David Victor Papers are composed of sixty file boxes of scripts and related production information. They are arranged in four series: radio scripts, television scripts, motion picture scripts, and auditions for both radio and television. The scripts are filed alphabetically by title of the radio and television series and within each individual series, alphabetically by script title. In cases where there is no title, the scripts are arranged chronologically by air date.
The most complete example in the radio series is Let George Do It, consisting of 210 scripts, most of which are annotated with both first and final drafts of the episodes. Also, the ratings for this series from 1949 to 1954 are included, both Pacific Nielson and Field Broadcast ratings. The Hedda Hopper Show includes 31 scripts, all annotated; some include rough drafts. The Mary Small Show is an example of one of the early radio variety shows, including 13 scripts, two of which are annotated. Also included are examples of various radio program genres: the western, Death Valley Sheriff; the serial, Her Honor, Nancy James; the audience-participation show, Let Yourself Go; the situation comedy, The Joan Davis Show; the suspense mystery, Molle Mystery Theatre; and the anthology drama, Vick's Matinee Theatre.
The television series includes the anthology drama, Fireside Theatre, with 29 scripts, several of them annotated. There are 12 scripts for Gunsmoke and 77 for The Rebel, which include final drafts only. Dr. Kildare contains 122 scripts. Most episodes are annotated and contain all or some of the following: correspondence, production notes, story idea, story outline, treatment, rough draft, revisions, re-writes, author's final draft and studio's final edited draft. Censorship notes from network continuity and production cost sheets are also included in several of the Kildare script developments. There are several examples of television adventure programs: Meet McGraw, Al Munch, Detective, The Crusader, I Am the Law, and Public Prosecutor.
The collection contains two motion picture scripts: The Gunslinger and Trooper Hook. The former is annotated but was never produced. The latter contains the story outline, production notes, and final draft and was produced through United Artists. The last series is a miscellaneous collection of auditions, story treatments, and pilots that either went into production and were never aired or were submitted for consideration only and do not refer to any particular program. These are arranged alphabetically in two separate series, radio and television auditions.
