Biography/History

David Phillip Harmon, the son of Sol L. and Rose Herman, was born in Buffalo, New York on September 3, 1918. He received a B.A. degree from Ohio State University in 1940, and immediately entered the field of show business as a song writer.

In 1942, Mr. Harmon changed to radio, and became a staff writer with CBS in New York. From 1943 to 1944, he was a radio writer for the Wrigley Company in Chicago, and during this time won an award from the War Writer's Board. He returned to New York as a free-lance writer for radio, and in 1947 started in television as a writer-actor-director. In 1954 he moved to Hollywood and became a film writer. Since that time he has been free-lancing in both television and motion pictures. His television credits include programs such as Rawhide, The Rifleman, The Untouchables, and Valentine's Day and anthologies such as The Dick Powell Show and Studio One.

Mr. Harmon was a council member of the Writer's Guild of America, West from 1959 to 1965. He is married; has three children, Nikki, Ross, and Randi; and resides in Pacific Palisades, California.

Scope and Content Note

The David P. Harmon Papers reflect the work of Mr. Harmon as a radio, television, and motion picture writer, and are composed entirely of scripts, outlines, and treatments.

The greatest portion of the collection is composed of scripts written for titled radio or television series. Unless noted otherwise, Harmon is assumed to have authored the scripts, several of which are annotated. The papers have been organized in three series -- Television, Motion Pictures, and Radio -- reflecting the various media for which Harmon has written. Arrangement is alphabetical by production title with individual titles within series generally filed alphabetically thereunder.

Better known radio productions include America in the Air, The Big Story, Cavalcade of America, Chesterfield Supper Club, Now Hear This, and Treasury Star Parade.

Among the television programs are Burke's Law, The Detectives, Dr. Kildare, Gang Busters, Gilligan's Island, I Cover Times Square, Law of the Plainsman, The Man Behind the Badge, Mr. Novak, Rawhide, The Rifleman, Tales of Wells Fargo, The Untouchables, Valentine's Day, and Walt Disney Presents: Texas John Slaughter. In addition several anthologies are represented, among them the Dick Powell Show, Jane Wyman Theatre, and Studio One. Of interest are a Valentine's Day script containing revisions by producer-writer Hal Kanter and a presentation for The Woman in the Case, written by Quinn Martin.

The Motion Pictures category includes a script for Johnny Concho, which was adapted from one of Harmon's earlier teleplays for Studio One (“A Stranger in Town”).
