Biography/History
Joseph Stein graduated from City College of New York, and for a time was in social work. He has been a writer for a number of television and radio shows, chiefly comedy, including Your Show of Shows, All Star Revue with Tallulah Bankhead, and the Hildegrade programs. Late in the forties William Glickman joined the Hildegrade writing staff, and he and Stein began other collaborations as well: sketches for Lend an Ear,Ziegfeld Follies,Alive and Kicking, and Inside USA; and books for Body Beautiful,Mr. Wonderful, and Plain and Fancy, and for a revue, Happily Ever After. Stein has collaborated with Robert Russell on the book for Take Me Along, and written the book for Juno and some straight plays, including Enter Laughing. He had some hand in the writing of Jamaica and No Time for Sergeants and collected royalties on both, although he is not listed as an author of either.
Scope and Content Note
The Joseph Stein Papers pertain totally to his professional career and are organized into five series: Stage Plays and Motion Pictures; Radio and Television; Unidentified Scripts; Routines for Particular Performers; and Miscellaneous Papers. The Radio and Television series is subdivided into three sections: regular series, single and special programs, and proposed programs. All are filed by title of the program rather than the name of the star, with the exception of the Hildegrade programs which were of a continuous character although the name changed with the sponsorship. The series of Routines for Particular Performers may include scripts for programs found elsewhere in the collection but unidentifiable as such. The Miscellaneous Papers include correspondence, contracts, financial records, and other papers.
The papers include information on these performers and programs:
