Abstract:
Papers of Harry and Roy Aitken, two brothers who pioneered in the production and distribution of motion pictures beginning with the silent film era. The collection consists of scripts and scenarios for silent films, often with other production materials such as photographs, reviews, continuity, cutting sheets, copyright information, as well as an actor index; correspondence; and business records. Financial and legal records relate to many of the Aitkens' companies, particularly the Keystone, Majestic, and New York motion picture studios and the Triangle and Tri-Stone Pictures distribution companies. A large quantity of general correspondence relates to the various companies' histories from 1909 to 1925. Among the motion picture pioneers mentioned are Louis Mayer, Mack Sennett, and Jean Hersholt. Also included are records of other Aitken film companies.

Biography/History

Harry (1878-1956) and Roy (1882-1978) Aitken first entered the film business in 1905 with the establishment of four nickelodeons in downtown Chicago. Several years later, they sold the nickelodeons and organized film exchange agencies in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and St. Louis and St. Joseph, Missouri. In the decade between 1910 and 1920, the Aitkens formed and financed a number of major film studios, including Majestic, Reliance, Keystone, Fine Arts, New York Motion Pictures and its subsidiaries, Broncho, Domino, and Kay-Bee. The Aitkens produced an estimated 2,500 films, which were marketed nationally and internationally through various distributing agencies under their direct control, such as Western Film Exchange, Mutual Film Corporation, Triangle Distributing Corporation, Epoch Producing Corporation, and Tri-Stone Pictures, Incorporated. Charlie Chaplin, Anita Loos, D. W. Griffith, William S. Hart, Mae Marsh, Dorothy and Lillian Gish, Thomas Ince, Harold Lloyd, Billie Burke, Mack Sennett, Charles Ray, Douglas Fairbanks, Dorothy Dalton, Hedda Hopper, Mary Pickford, and Gloria Swanson were only a few of the talents in the Aitkens' employ.

Scope and Content Note

The Aitken Brothers' Papers are an important source of information on the history of the silent film and include materials on all aspects of production, distribution, and financing. The collection is divided into four categories: scripts and scenarios, correspondence, loose business records, and bound business records. The scripts and scenarios (Boxes 1-9) are organized alphabetically by title; filed with them are such items as photographs, title sheets, publicity data, reviews, production and expense reports, continuity and cutting sheets, and copyright information; occasionally, letters and memoranda relating to a specific film have been filed with the appropriate script rather than in the section of correspondence. The correspondence (Boxes 10-32) has been organized chronologically and is followed by one folder (Box 32) of undated, partially dated, and fragmentary materials; frequently, business materials such as contracts, agreements, leases, assignments, statements of assets and liabilities, insurance policies, and minutes of board meetings are filed with the correspondence when they pertain directly to the contents of a particular letter.

All additional loose business records are organized independently (Boxes 33-45) by month and year; the last two boxes (44 and 45) in this section contain undated, partially dated, fragmentary, and miscellaneous business and production materials. The bound business records (Volumes 1-202) are arranged alphabetically by company and subdivided alphabetically according to the contents of the particular volume, whether cash book, journal, ledger, minutes book, voucher register, etc.; it should be noted that Volumes 201 and 202 are filed out of sequence. The volumes are available only on microfilm.

This arrangement of the microfilmed bound business records obscures the existence of a coherent set of records of the costs of films produced between 1914 and 1917 in the Aitken-leased studio at 4500 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. In these years, this studio produced films which were released as Majestic Motion Pictures, Reliance Motion Pictures, Komic Films, D.W. Griffith Productions, and, from September 1915, Fine Arts Films (the Griffith-directed films Birth of a Nation and Intolerance were also produced in this studio). Although these costs were eventually assigned to the corporation that owned the film at release, the volumes recording them are essentially studio books, not company books; they document all films produced at the studio, irrespective of ownership, and no films produced elsewhere (or rather, only such work as was done in the studio for films basically produced elsewhere). These volumes could thus be considered as documenting the Los Angeles Reliance-Majestic-Fine-Arts studio, 1914-1917, as follows:

  • Los Angeles Majestic Production Record (shorts and features):
    1914 April-1915 January (Reel 8, Volume 59)
    1915 January-1915 April (Reel 7, Volume 53)
  • Los Angeles D.W. Griffith Productions Production Record (includes records for The Avenging Conscience, The Birth of a Nation, and Intolerance): 1914 April-1917 September (Reel 18, Volume 99)
  • Los Angeles Reliance Production Record (shorts and features): 1914 April-1915 April (Reel 18, Volume 98)
  • Los Angeles Reliance and Majestic Production Record (shorts): 1915 April-1915 September (Reel 7, Volume 54)
  • Los Angeles Reliance and Majestic Production Record (features): 1915 March-1915 September (Reel 7, Volume 55)

In 1965, as a class project, Mr. Dale M. Baum made a detailed index of the first nine boxes of the Aitken Brothers Papers. This includes an alphabetical listing of actors and the films they appeared in and an alphabetical listing of films. This index is filed in Box 45.
