Robert Kingdon was born on a farm near Hitchcock, South Dakota on August 3, 1903. He was the first child born to Henry Kingdon and Elsie Pidge Kingdon. The Kingdon family moved to Huron, South Dakota when Kingdon was thirteen years old. Kingdon attended Huron College, receiving an undergraduate degree in chemistry in 1925. While studying at Huron College, Kingdon met Anna Catherine McCune. “Catherine” McCune was born on August 31, 1906 in Phengyang, Korea, the daughter of George Shannon McCune and Helen Bailey McAfee. George McCune was a missionary in Asia and later the president of Huron College. Catherine attended Huron College and received a BA in 1926. The Kingdons were married in Huron on December 31, 1926 and first lived in Chicago where they were both students at the Chicago Theological Seminary. After attending Yale Divinity School for one year Rev. Kingdon transferred to Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS) where he received his BD in 1928. While in seminary, Rev. Kingdon also received a Master's degree in history from the University of Chicago and in 1953 received an honorary DD from Huron College.

Robert Kingdon was ordained immediately after graduating in 1928 and shortly thereafter accepted a pastorate in Kuhului, Maui, Hawaii where he and Catherine served from 1928 to 1936. The Kahului Union Church was run under the auspices of the American Board of Home Missions of the Congregational Christian Church. The Kingdons then served the Pilgrim Church in Honolulu from 1936 to 1940. In 1940 the Kingdons received a call to the First Congregational Church in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Rev. Kingdon led the church when the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed denominations merged in 1961 to become the United Church of Christ (UCC). In the early 1960s, Rev. Kingdon guided the church through the construction of an expanded and updated church.

The Kingdons were active in both state and national Congregational and UCC organizations. Robert and Catherine Kingdon served as moderators at the state conference in 1962 and for the Winnebago Association of Congregational Churches from 1952 to 1954. Rev. Kingdon was active in the Wisconsin Rapids Ministerial Association and the Central Wisconsin Ministerial Association as well as the Northwest Ministerial Association. Mrs. Kingdon was active in Women's Fellowship groups at the state and local levels and traveled to different churches to promote Mission Education. Besides church activities the Kingdons were involved in many civic organizations including Rotary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the League of Women Voters, and the American Association of University Women.

The Kingdons served in Wisconsin Rapids from 1940 to 1968 when Rev. Kingdon retired. After his retirement, the First Congregational Church named Rev. Kingdon Pastor Emeritus. In their retirement the Kingdons returned to Hawaii to serve seven interim pastorates and traveled around the world once. The Kingdons had five children: Robert Jr., Anna Carol (Dudley), Henry, John and Arthur. Robert Kingdon died March 15, 1981 and Catherine Kingdon died February 15, 1995.

(39 archives boxes and 1 card file box)  Scope and Content Note The Kingdons' papers reflect their long service to the Congregational Church-UCC. The collection is broken down into seven series: Sermons; Personal Ministerial Records; Correspondence; First Congregational Church, Wisconsin Rapids files; Mission Education and Women's Fellowship files; General Congregational Council/UCC General Synod files; and News clippings. The SERMONS cover the span of Robert Kingdon's life as a minister. Running from 1929 to 1980, the sermons are organized by regular sermons and sermons that Rev. Kingdon identified as special. The regular sermons are arranged in chronological order and run from 1929 to 1977. Kingdon's special sermons are arranged by subject and chronologically thereunder. Special sermon subjects include: Union Lenten services; Good Friday services; Easter services; communion services; children's sermons; various special occasions (such as the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.); High School vespers and baccalaureate services; and funerals. Also included with the sermons are lectures and prayers given by Rev. Kingdon from 1954 through 1976. Rev. Kingdon reused all or parts of several sermons and the dates the sermons were first used as well as when they were reused were marked by Kingdon on the back side of the last page of each sermon; they are arranged according to when they were first preached. The PERSONAL MINISTERIAL RECORDS contain a variety of materials and records kept by Rev. Kingdon to aid in his ministerial duties. The two major aspects of this series are Rev. Kingdon's Pastoral Record Books and Calendars. Kingdon kept a personal record of important events during his pastorates in Hawaii and in Wisconsin Rapids. Recorded in the books are all the baptisms, marriages and funerals he performed from 1930 to 1976. The Calendars document the important role Rev. Kingdon had in the religious life of the community, detailing his daily activities from 1948 through 1978. The personal ministerial records also include materials, 1942-1964, from the Central Wisconsin Ministerial Association of which Kingdon was a member; Christmas service programs; clippings used to compose sermons; and information about special services at the First Congregational Church in Wisconsin Rapids. The CORRESPONDENCE in this collection is made up of two major headings. First, there is an alphabetical correspondence file, 1945-1967, organized by the Kingdons. In the alphabetical file the Kingdons placed letters concerning maintenance of the church in Wisconsin Rapids as well as letters from church members concerning matters of church business. The other half of the correspondence contains letters from church organizations and selected members, 1941-1972. Filed with this correspondence are various related materials including pamphlets, newsletters and budget reports. Correspondents include Women's Fellowship, Pilgrim Fellowship, George W. Mead, Boy Scouts (which Rev. Kingdon was involved with throughout his pastorate) and the Wisconsin Rapids Ministerial Association. The FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, WISCONSIN RAPIDS files include materials that were collected during Kingdon's pastorate as well as a few materials that predate and postdate Kingdon's pastorate. Included in this collection is research conducted on the history of the First Congregational Church recorded on index cards. The research is organized into several different subject areas including pastors, buildings, members, youth organizations and community. Also included in the history file is a history of women's work in the church. The remainder of this series contains information collected by Mr. and Mrs. Kingdon about the church and its role in the community. Subjects include building suggestions; the Chicago Theological Seminary; Christian education; Deacons and Deaconesses meetings; files on assistant ministers; budget; trustees meetings; Women's Fellowship; American Association of University Women; League of Women Voters; and social action. The MISSION EDUCATION AND WISCONSIN FELLOWSHIP files were collected by Catherine Kingdon and contain materials concerning mission education and the Wisconsin Fellowship of Congregational Christian Women (WFCCW). The mission education files contain materials from mission education in the local Wisconsin Rapids church and mission education workshops conducted by Catherine Kingdon around the state. The WFCCW materials document women's fellowship at the state level in Wisconsin, primarily events such as house parties at Green Lake, state and national conferences and president's workshops. The GENERAL CONGREGATIONAL COUNCIL/UCC GENERAL SYNOD files reflect the Kingdons' involvement in the Congregational/UCC church at the national level. This series focuses on the merger of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed churches. The Kingdons attended several national conferences/synods as both visitors and voting delegates in the 1950s and 1960s and were present at the Council meetings to discuss the merging of the two churches to form the UCC and at the Uniting General Synod in 1957. The NEWS CLIPPINGS are a small collection of newspaper clippings concerning the church in Wisconsin Rapids and the Kingdons' involvement in the community from 1940 to 1976.
