Scope and Content Note

Records of Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton, 2003-2006. The bulk of the materials are related to economic development; the prosperity of workers in Wisconsin, particularly women; National Guard ceremonies; and also capture less documented causes such as mental health and higher education. Lawton was an arts advocate and led a national effort to support an Energy Independence and Global Climate Change Resolution and had a green energy agenda; these interests and efforts are not reflected strongly in this part. This part is organized into five series: DOCUMENTS, MISCELLANEOUS APPEARANCES, NATIONAL GUARD/VETERANS, OFFICE VISITS, and WW=P/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

The bulk of the collection are photographs which depict many of the public functions of the Lieutenant Governor's office including office visits and speaking engagements. There are many images of Lawton attending homecoming celebrations for Wisconsin National Guard units returning from Iraq. The collection includes one video of Lawton speaking at the Learn, Earn, and Prosper Conference (LEAP) dedicated to inspiring high school girls to explore educational and career opportunities. There are photo prints of a meeting with tribal leaders, giving a commencement speech, and sending off the 126th Field Artillery unit. The bulk of the images were unidentified when received. Images were grouped by content year and specific events identified when known.

The DOCUMENTS series consists of three areas of interest: speech preparation, website content, with the bulk of the materials concerning WW=P, an economic initiative geared towards improving the lives of women in Wisconsin. The speech preparation folder comprises talking points for speeches, articles of interest, press releases, and her biography. The website folder contains materials and announcements for the website. Finally, the WW=P folder contains presentations, meeting notices, corporate advisory board materials, and governance documents.

MISCELLANEOUS APPEARANCES are arranged with sub-series encompassing known events. Images depict events around Wisconsin and the United States including speeches, conference appearances, award ceremonies, and community visits. There are images from a labor strike against Tyson Foods in Jefferson; the National Lieutenant Governors Association conference in Seattle, Washington; a northern tour of the state through cities like Superior, Ashland, and Wausau; and other unidentified events.

The NATIONAL GUARD/VETERANS series contains images of various Wisconsin National Guard homecoming ceremonies at Volk Field and a couple other locations around the state. Included are images of Lieutenant Governor Lawton's speeches and of Lawton speaking with troops and family members.

OFFICE VISITS contain sub-series encompassing known events or groupings. Images show visits by community members, civic and organizational groups, and school groups to Lieutenant Governor Lawton's office in the Capitol.

The WW=P/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT series comprises the bulk of the accession and contains sub-series. The images are from various WW=P and women in government events as well as business tours around the state promoting economic development. The video shows Lawton giving a speech at the Learn, Earn, and Prosper (LEAP) conference dedicated to inspiring high school girls to explore educational and career opportunities.
