Scope and Content Note: Alphabetically-arranged subject files, 1981-1997, covering a wide variety of topics related to the legal aspects of prison administration. Documented issues include probation and parole, “good time,” prisoner's rights, prison facilities, and sentencing. Of particular interest are two incidents that concerned prisoners in segregation that were investigated by the department's legal staff. One of these prisoners, an HIV patient, died while under intensive sanctions.

Scope and Content Note: Subject files, 1986-1999, concerning legal issues related to the Department of Corrections, primarily related to inmate complaints and inmate rights, probation and parole, prison sites (Mayville and Trostel), and administrative rules. There are case files for several cases brought by inmates and the public against the department; the lawsuit of Lawrencia Bembenek is well documented. This accession contains several files related to Jeffery Dahmer; the file related to his death investigation and a file related to an open records request are not restricted.
