Contents List
Series 2587
Part 1 (Series 2587): Original Collection, 1916-1936
Physical Description: 3.6 c.f. (9 volumes)
Scope and Content Note: Session laws of 1847 (chapter 253) created the Commissioners of Fisheries. These commissioners were “to receive all spawns of fish of all kinds donated by the general government to the state of Wisconsin”. The commissioners' duties were more fully defined by chapter 307 of the Session Laws of 1876. The commissioners were abolished in 1915 when they were merged with several other agencies to create the State Conservation Commission. By 1916, the Bureau of Fisheries ran several fish hatcheries and distributed thousands of fish, fry and fingerlings throughout the state. These fish stocking records document the distribution of fish, including the following details: records of the state fish hatcheries, a breakdown, by county, of the numbers and types of fish distributed, and how many fish eggs were hatched per year. The same information for the years 1882-1914 can be found in the state's biennial reports of the “Wisconsin's Public Documents” series in the SHSW library. Information for years 1915 and 1924 are not included in this series. Volumes 1-8 do not exist.
