Abstract:
Records, 1930-1986, related to community fluoridation in Wisconsin, documenting both the arguments for and against water fluoridation. Well documented are safety concerns, articles about fluoride in water, and health issues associated with fluoridation. Water fluoridation is considered by the Center for Disease Control to be one of the major public health advances of the twentieth century.

Scope and Content Note: Subject files, 1956-1986, consisting of reports, correspondence and journal and newspaper articles on a variety of issues, including campaigns for fluoridation, cancer, congenital defects, dietary fluoride, economics, the history of fluoridation, opposition to fluoridation, prenatal and infant exposure to fluoride, and mouth rinsing with fluoride.

Physical Description: 1.7 cubic feet (1 records center carton, 2 archives boxes, and 1 oversize folder), 3 reels of 16 mm film, 2 3/4-inch videocassettes (in 1 video box), 1 12-inch disc recording, and 48 transparencies 
Scope and Content Note: Records, 1947-1981, including correspondence with the Division of Health, much of which concerns purported heart problems due to fluoridation, especially claims made by a nurse in Antigo, Wisconsin that fluoridation caused a series of heart-related deaths. There are also reports and newspaper and journal articles on fluoridation. Of note are surveys taken of the dental health of school children in various cities and counties in Wisconsin, to determine the effects of fluoridation in those communities. Also included are three 16 mm films on fluoridation; a videocassette recording of a forum on community fluoridation from 1978; a 12-inch record of a “Community Controversy” hearing issued by the New York State Department of Health; slides of water towers, well pumps and pumping stations; and a 1961 poster issued by the Keep America Committee decrying fluoridated water, the polio vaccine, and mental hygiene.

Scope and Content Note: Records, 1949-1984, related to drinking water fluoridation focused on Antigo, Wisconsin and the community's 1960 decision to stop putting fluoride in water, the fluoridation of Antigo's water resumed in 1965 after an increase in tooth decay in children. The accession contains correspondence and articles about fluoridation. The scrapbook contains printed articles from a variety of publications opposed to fluoride in water.
