Abstract:

Case history books containing records of men and boys between the ages of sixteen and thirty who were admitted to the Wisconsin State Reformatory between August 1898 and June 1954. Each entry includes an inmate's photograph, age, physical description, crime, circumstances of the crime, sentence, record of previous arrests, religion, education, family history, school record, conduct report, and record of parole applications.

By case number, assigned chronologically by date of admission to the institution.

Volume 1 contains a name index for 1898 to 1903. Series 2101, Master file cards, is a partial name index to this series for 1921 to 1954. The index is incomplete in two ways: 1) many Wisconsin State Reformatory inmates who were discharged before 1945 are not included, and 2) not all cards include the institutional case numbers needed to access records in this series. Case numbers for the Wisconsin State Reformatory may appear with the prefix “WSR,” or “R.”

In addition, there is a general guide to Division of Corrections case records at the Archives Reading Room Reference Desk. The guide describes all case records at the Archives for men, women, boys and girls in the Wisconsin corrections system since 1837.

Series 2083 is a 10% sample of case files of inmates admitted to the Wisconsin State Reformatory between 1927 and 1940.
