Abstract:

Records of the Equal Rights Division including minutes of the Equal Rights Council, correspondence of the Division Administrator, files of the Housing and Public Accommodations Coordinator and Employment Coordinator, and correspondence of the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) documenting alleged discriminatory business practice. Records also include newsclippings; individual case files of EEOC investigations and complaints regarding possible violations of civil rights legislation; correspondence of the Council on Housing relating to housing conditions and practices; and public accommodations surveys in resort areas.

The 1967 reorganization act transferred to Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations (DILHR) the Governor's Commission on Human Rights, making it the Equal Rights Division, under which it consolidated the functions of the Equal Opportunities Division (formerly the Fair Employment Practices Division) of the Industrial Commission.

This collection was received in multiple parts and is organized into 2 major parts. These materials have not been physically interfiled and researchers might need to consult more than one part to locate similar materials.

The records in this series arrived with records created by (and prior to the consolidation of) the Governor's Commission on Human Rights and the Fair Employment Practices (Equal Opportunities) Division. Most came from accession 1971/148. Accession Number: 1997/192
