Abstract:
Messages, mainly 1836-1876, concerning the condition of the state, recommendations for legislation, suggestions for improvement of bills and criticisms; veto messages; and other original handwritten communications of the Governor to the Legislature deposited with the Secretary of State for printing in the Legislative Journal. Of special interest is an 1843 report by Alfred Brumsen about travel in the state and a copy of the 1842 treaty with the Dakota Indians. Messages for 1848, 1849, and 1856 are also available on microfilm.

Note

Because the governor's communications with the legislature appear in the journal, in 1996 this series was weeded and only the early handwritten communications and the draft or apparently unprinted messages of later date were retained. Conversations with the Secretary of State and the Journal office confirmed that these materials are destroyed, generally after the next legislative session.
