Statistical and narrative reports to the governor from militia commanders and the State Adjutants General concerning personnel, equipment and general conditions. Pre-Civil War returns sometimes include lists of individuals available for duty in particular towns. Beginning in 1876 the reports are of inspections carried out by representatives of the Adjutant General. Included is statistical information on personnel, arms, equipment, instruction, and narrative comments on condition and preparedness. For 1880-1890, the file includes copies of annual reports made to the office of the Adjutant General in Washington, D.C.
