Abstract:
Papers, 1939-1993, of Marion Hawkins, a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, consisting of correspondence, personal diaries, travel diaries and journals, speeches and writings, and photographs. The bulk of the collection consists of her correspondence, arranged chronologically, which includes letters and cards sent to Hawkins by her friends and employers. Information in the letters reveals how Hawkins' work as a professor and additional volunteer activities influenced the university. Hawkins' home diaries record both her daily personal and professional activities including the classes she taught. Her travel diaries document her trips both abroad and in the United States and detail her personal travel experiences, description of the various locales, and contemporary news of the countries in which she is visiting. She later used these travel diaries as background material while writing her travel journals which she compiled to formally express how she experienced these foreign lands.

Biography/History

Marion Elizabeth Hawkins was born in Kinnickinnic, St. Croix County, Wisconsin, on December 27, 1916. Her parents were Matthew A. and Agnes Jane Carroll Hawkins. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1934. She attended college at River Falls State Teachers College, graduating with honors in 1938. While in college, she was involved in debate, the yearbook, Masquers, Pi Kappa Delta, and the student senate. After graduation, she taught English and history at the high school level in Wisconsin in the cities of New Richmond, Monroe, and Milwaukee.

She joined the staff of River Falls State Teachers College in 1946. At River Falls, she taught in the English department. She also taught some speech classes during her early years at the college. She earned her Master's degree in 1949 and her Ph.D. degree in 1965 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Miss Hawkins was actively involved in many campus activities while a professor at River Falls. These included advising the forensics club, advising the Newman Club, serving on the University Foundation Committee, and helping to establish many alumni chapters. Her professional memberships included the American Association of University Women, the American Association of University Professors, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the National Council of Teachers of English, Pi Kappa Delta, and Kappa Delta Pi.

Miss Hawkins received the distinct honor in 1972 of being awarded both the Distinguished Teacher Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She retired from UW-River Falls in 1981. She died on August 22, 1999.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of personal and professional material. A large portion of the material was obtained from scrapbooks disassembled prior to coming to the Archives. Broad ranges of dates were entered on the scrapbook material by Miss Hawkins and this accounts for the awkward dating on some of the materials. It was not possible to assign exact dates to some of the material.

Box 1 contains awards, general Christmas letters sent out by Hawkins, correspondence (mostly greeting cards and personal notes to Hawkins), miscellaneous papers, newspaper clippings, and information on Grace Pilgrim Bloom. Mrs. Bloom received her Master's degree from UW-River Falls in November of 1972 at the age of 86, making her the oldest graduate ever of the university. Miss Hawkins was Mrs. Bloom's advisor. The information deals with Bloom earning her degree and also correspondence between the two.

The largest part of the collection consists of travel journals written by Miss Hawkins when she took various trips to Europe and Asia. The journals are daily diaries of what she did and whom she saw when on her trip. Also present are photographs, a scrapbook of a trip to New York, and a compiled book of the lectures she gave at National Taiwan Normal University.

Arranged by date and consisting primarily of letters sent to Hawkins by her friends and employers, her correspondence comprises the majority of the 2013 addition. Information in the letters reveals how Hawkins' work as a professor and additional volunteer activities influenced the university. Hawkins' home diaries record both her daily personal and professional activities including the meals she ate, classes she taught, and time she awoke. Her travel diaries also record both her personal and professional activities while she was in various states or countries. In addition to recording personal information, Hawkins often writes about the landscapes and historic scenery she saw and daily news events of her destination. She then used these travel diaries as background material while writing her travel journals that she wrote to formally express how she experienced foreign lands.
