Biography/History

After his graduation from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1904, Dr. Glenn D. Gallup (1881-1929) practiced medicine in River Falls, Wisconsin until his death. In addition to his general practice he was an examining surgeon for the United States Pension Department. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the American Legion.

Frances Crippen was born in Roberts, Wisconsin, circa 1884. She graduated from River Falls Normal School in 1904 and married Dr. Glenn Gallup the following year. The Gallups had three children, Glenn, Charles, and Marjorie. After her husband died Frances Gallup taught in the Menomonie, Wisconsin, elementary schools until about 1950. For part of that time she taught special education classes for the handicapped. Frances Gallup was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, an international organization to further opportunities for higher education for women.

After about 1940 Frances Gallup lived with her mother, Lucinda Crippen Spillcke (b. 1854) in Roberts and in River Falls. Mrs. Spillcke had an active interest in the history of her family on her mother's side, the Peabodys of Salem, Massachusetts, and organized frequent reunions of the “Peabody Clan” before her death in 1951.

Glenn D. Gallup, Jr. (b. 1906), the oldest child of Glenn and Frances Gallup, graduated from River Falls High School in 1924 and from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1937. He established a law practice in Stockton, California, and married Dorothy (Faye) Wittonville.

Charles A. Gallup (b. 1908) graduated from River Falls High School in 1929, attended Carleton College, and graduated from the University of Southern California medical school in 1936. He served in World War II and, with his wife Mignon, practiced medicine in California.

Marjorie Gallup (b. 1914) graduated from River Falls Teachers College in 1934 and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She married Richard E. Morehouse of New York City in 1938 and continued to live in the East.

Scope and Content Note

The Gallup Family papers are arranged in six categories: papers of Glenn D. Gallup, Frances Gallup, Charles Gallup, Glenn D. Gallup, Jr., and Marjorie Gallup, and family correspondence and papers.

GLENN D. GALLUP'S papers, 1902-1929, consist primarily of income tax returns, 1926-1928, a few business papers for the same period, and a medical case record book, circa 1910-1920, portions of which were used as a scrapbook. FRANCES GALLUP'S papers, 1901-1961, include a few documents concerning her personal life, but most relate to her teaching. Among them are lesson plans, course notes, and curriculum materials.

The single folder of CHARLES GALLUP papers, 1924-1926, 1945-1946, includes a brief biographical note and some school materials. Materials from GLENN D. GALLUP, JR., 1913-1937, relate entirely to his student days, particularly at law school, and include essays, course notes, and exercise papers. The MARJORIE GALLUP papers, 1923-1936, also relate entirely to her school years.

The FAMILY CORRESPONDENCE AND PAPERS, 1862-1956, consists largely of correspondence between Frances Gallup and her sisters, Mrs. Mercedes Rider and Mrs. Grace L. Ehle and with her husband's sister, Mae Gorham. There also is correspondence between Frances and her three children and with her mother before her mother lived with her. Many of the postcards include personal correspondence. Also among the family papers are genealogies of the Peabody family extending to the 18th century and photographs of the Gallups and of related family members.
