Abstract:
Envelopes used to collect personal history and military service records for every person living in Racine County, Wisconsin who served in any branch of the United States military, primarily in World War II. For some individuals other prior military service is also recorded. Most of the envelopes contain worksheets, newspaper clippings, and photographs of the individuals, most in military uniform. Although the amount of information provided on each envelope varies, the following data is generally completed: name; political subdivision; draft and serial numbers; home address; name, address, and relationship of nearest relative; personal history including date and place of birth; citizenship status; race; marital status; Racine County schools attended; occupation; last employer; date entered service; drafted or enlisted; branch of service; rank on entry; reception center; training camps and schools; date of discharge; place of discharge; remarks; and whether photograph is enclosed or not.

Arrangement of the Materials

Primarily alphabetical by town or municipality within Racine County and thereunder alphabetical by surname.

Scope and Content Note

The first 28 boxes of the collection contain envelopes for soldiers from towns and municipalities in Racine County. Box 28 contains several envelopes for soldiers not from Racine County.

Boxes 29 through 34 consist of photocopies of soldiers' envelopes which contained no other documents apart from the information on the outside of the envelopes. The photocopies have been foldered and are arranged in one alphabetical sequence under the heading of “General Racine County.”

The last part of Box 34 contains photocopies of newspaper clippings concerning Racine County individuals in the military. No envelopes existed for these individuals.
