Biography/History

The Lafayette County Breeders Cooperative Association was incorporated February 20, 1946, in Darlington, Wisconsin, to promote better farming methods, eradicate disease, and generally improve dairy herds through selective breeding and artificial insemination programs. A board of directors, empowered to borrow money, purchase land, and conduct business transactions, and a staff of veterinary technicians constituted the administration of the Association. An annual meeting and special meetings as necessary were held and any livestock owner who paid a membership fee and promised to use the services of the association was eligible for membership.

During its short period of greatest activity, the association attracted members from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa, and its technicians visited hundreds of farms each month. Declining membership and services caused the members to dissolve the association on November 16, 1960, although administrative activities continued until 1967, with final dissolution occurring in 1973.

Scope and Content Note

The operation of the association is revealed in a long series of minutes of membership and directors' meetings, and in its financial records, which span the entire history of the association. The collection is divided into two series, Administrative Records and Financial Records. Within each series the records are arranged chronologically.

ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS include minutes, December 1946-November 1962 and March 1967-November 1968, of regular monthly and annual membership meetings, directors' and special meetings, and joint meetings held with the Dairy Herd Improvement Association.

The FINANCIAL RECORDS of the association not only consist of audit reports, other financial statements, and income tax returns, but also include scattered monthly reports of the technicians, detailing the number of visits made, number of miles driven, and expenses.
