Abstract:

Photographic prints, lantern slides, and negatives, primarily 1900-1905, collected by Dorothy Park, a former member of the staff of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, and several home movies shot by her brother. The photographs not only depict the Allen and William Park families, who resided at 1114 and 1128 East Johnson Street, Madison, Wisconsin, but also the William Barckhan family who resided at 1150 East Johnson Street, and, to a lesser extent, the William Van Deusen family and other unidentified sources.

The Barckhan photographs document family life, their places of business, and their recreational interests in raising and driving miniature horses and in boating. The Park photographs primarily document family life. Other prominent topics include the Capitol Square, carnivals, parades, Madison street scenes (primarily on the east side), boating, schools, firehouses, and the University of Wisconsin campus.

The Barckhans presented lantern slide shows featuring their photographs to their family and friends; the collection includes hand-tinted targets used for these shows, as well as several commercially produced slide sets on Southern and racial themes. Also part of the collection are several home movies of Madison and vacation scenes taken by Maurice S. Park during the 1940s and 1950s.

Why Park had custody of the Barckhan photographs is unexplained, although they are known to have been neighbors. Generally, the Park negatives are 5 x 7-inch, the Barckhan images are 4 x 5-inch lantern slides without original negatives, and the Van Deusen photographs are X3 copy negatives made shortly after donation of the originals to the Society. The latter were discarded after copying because of deterioration.

The photographs are arranged by format and size regardless of creator and then arranged alphabetically by place or subject. In general, images are arranged by place if the specific location could be identified; if not, the image is filed by subject. When location and subject are both manifest, filing precedence is given to place.

CA 755	Madison from the Courthouse roof; Travels in the East and in Wisconsin, 1953 Note: This film includes nice shots taken from the car, probably on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, of tunnels and woods in autumn in 1953. Also included is a vacation on a boat, perhaps on the Great Lakes. There are several shots of freighters, cityscapes, and the Cleveland Yacht Club.
