Abstract:
Drawings and watercolors attributed to Peter Rindisbacher, a Swiss-born immigrant whose artwork documented Native American and frontier life in the early American and Canadian West. The collection includes two wildlife drawings, a portrait of Winnebago Chief Isaac Winnesheek, and four watercolors of Native American hunting scenes.

Biography/History

Rindisbacher was born in Switzerland in 1806. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1821 and by 1826 had moved to southwestern Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

The photographs in the collection are of works attributed to Rindisbacher held by institutions other than the Wisconsin Historical Society. Society staff gathered these reproductions in the 1950s.
