Biography/History

Calvin Chapin Bayley, the son of James and Hannah Chapin Bayley, was born in Derby, Vermont on December 21, 1809. After attending the Kimball Union Academy in Meridan, New Hampshire, he received both a bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Amherst College in 1837 and 1840 respectively. After graduation, Mr. Bayley served as the principal of Manlius Academy in Manlius, New York, from 1838 to 1846. During this period he married Miss Ann Fisher, a teacher at the academy.

The Bayley family moved to Waupun, Wisconsin in 1847, where Mr. Bayley conducted his own farm. From 1856 to 1861 he served as principal of Brockway College in Ripon, Wisconsin and from 1866 to 1870 he taught at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.

Mr. Bayley died in 1903, after spending the last twenty-eight years of life on his farm in Waupun.

Scope and Content Note

The Calvin C. Bayley Papers include Mr. Bayley's incoming correspondence, 1830-1904, relating mainly to his profession as an educator. The correspondence for the 1830's and 1840's is particularly rich in information concerning both Amherst College and Manlius Academy. One folder of Huldah Bayley Leavens correspondence, 1843-1848, to her brother Calvin C. Bayley, has been left separate since the letters make reference to the Spring Farm Association, a Wisconsin Fourierite community near Sheboygan Falls in the late 1840's.

The collection also includes some genealogical material and photographs relating to the Bayley family, as well as miscellaneous unsorted business papers and miscellaneous writings by Calvin C. Bayley, including his reminiscences of the Republican Party convention in Pittsburgh in 1856. This was printed in the Wisconsin Magazine of History, volume 38, 1954-1955.
