Abstract:
Material collected by Dale Heikkinen, mainly relating to his family, especially his father, Leo Heikkinen, an inventor and manufacturer of logging equipment; to the family business, Prentice Hydraulics; and to the history and economic development of Prentice, Wisconsin. Included is a folder of information about George Elliot MacKinnon, a prominent local doctor. There is also genealogical information about the Pokela family (Heikkinen's mother's family) and information about the history and folklore of Finns in Wisconsin, particularly in the Brantwood area.

Additional materials about the history of Prentice and Brantwood, including locals Stanley Morner (actor Dennis Morgan), sculptor Donal Hord, and naturalist Sigurd Olson, remain in the possession of Dale Heikkinen, Prentice, Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

Included are clippings; copies of awards; Prentice Hydraulics equipment catalogs, manuals, advertising, and employee handbooks; videotapes; photographs; a poster; and miscellaneous ephemera. The videotapes include footage of logging operations in the 1930s and 1940s, family photographs, Leo Heikkinen Memorials, the Prentice Progress Days parade, Prentice Hydraulics, an interview with Carl and Bill Heikkinen, and Finnish polka music played by the Finn Power Band from Merrill, Wisconsin. The photographs, transparencies, and photocopies include images of Leo Heikkinen, Leo Heikkinen Day in 1966, Prentice, Wisconsin, and images related to Prentice Hydraulics. Also included are images from a story in Life Magazine about Dr. G.E. Mackinnon.
