Abstract:
Records of the Democratic Party organization in the Wisconsin Assembly documenting the views of the party on various legislative measures. The processed portion of the collection consists of biennial summaries of legislative accomplishments, 1971-1980; memoranda (“The Vest Meets the Press”), 1979-1982, about the press conferences of Republican Governor Lee S. Dreyfus; and speeches, press releases, draft letters, news columns prepared by the caucus for individual assemblymen during the 1987-1988 legislative session, as well as some background research materials. Approximately 120,000 photographs taken by the caucus photographer, 1985-1994, documenting Democratic assemblymen on the floor, in committee, meeting with visitors, at bill signing ceremonies of Governor Tommy Thompson, and at various events in and around the Capitol are unprocessed.

Biography/History

In the Wisconsin State Legislature, Democratic and Republican Party organization is maintained through the party caucus. State funds are allocated to both a majority and a minority caucus in both houses. Caucuses are first mentioned in the Wisconsin Blue Book in 1962. A caucus is organized largely for the purpose of determining and putting into effect a unified party position regarding legislation. Although the caucus of each party nominates a slate of candidates for legislative offices, the positions are usually held by the nominees of the majority party.
