Abstract:
Papers of a civil rights worker and political activist who served as an organizer and representative for a number of groups in the south, among them, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Southern Conference Educational Fund, Southern Student Organizing Committee, and National Council of Churches. Shirah's papers include original and printed correspondence with other activists; proposals, prospectuses, and reports written by Shirah and others regarding civil rights projects; Shirah's field reports from 1963 and 1964; and miscellaneous printed and typed civil rights material. There is also a small file of papers from the Students for a Democratic Society, reflecting Shirah's interest in SDS activities.
