Abstract:
Research material gathered by August Meier and Elliott Rudwick, two history professors at Kent State University, for their history of the Congress of Racial Equality. From the national CORE offices are photocopies or transcriptions of minutes, proceedings, and reports of meetings of the National Action Council, the steering committee, and CORE's annual convention; financial reports; and copies of revised constitutions. Four reels of microfilm contain records of the Seattle Chapter of CORE, 1961-1969, including extensive files on housing, employment, education, and local conventions and workshops. An additional reel of microfilm contains material from the Bancroft Library consisting of miscellaneous national, California, and other chapter papers and newsletters.

Scope and Content Note

The photocopies in this collection primarily include papers relating to CORE's annual conventions and to meetings of the National Action Council of CORE, and its steering committee. Most numerous among these records are the minutes of meetings, and proceedings and reports presented at conventions or to the NAC. Regarding the business conducted at meetings and conventions, separate files have been created for revisions of CORE's constitution and for financial reports. A number of the official documents were received in deteriorating physical condition and have been transcribed and so labeled. Also in the collection are Meier's typewritten notes of records he consulted in the New York CORE offices. Handwritten annotations by Meier or Rudwick appear on other items.

Five microfilm reels containing selected CORE documents from the holdings of the University of Washington and the Bancroft Library at the University of California-Berkeley, and filmed at Rudwick's request, also accompany the papers. Records of the Seattle Chapter of CORE, 1961-1969, comprise four of the microfilm reels, while an additional reel contains national, California, and other chapter papers and newsletters. The records from the Bancroft Library were not arranged chronologically within the files.
