Papers, 1848-1955, of General Carl R. Gray, railroad executive with the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railroad, brigadier general and director of military railroads for the European Theater of Operations during World War II, and head of the Veterans Administration from 1948 to 1953. The papers primarily document his lifelong work and interest in railroads; his professional career; the history of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha, the Chicago & North Western, and other railroad companies; and the history of U.S. Army military railroad operations in Europe and North Africa, 1942-1945.

Presented by Mrs. Carl R. Gray, Hudson, Wisconsin; Mrs. C. Maxwell Dieffenbach, Wyoming, Ohio; and Carl R. Gray Jr. The manuscript materials were received from General Gray's estate in 1955 and include materials once in the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway company museum which became defunct in the 1940s. Accession Number: M59-152
