Biography/History
Connections, an underground newspaper with a circulation of approximately 6,000, was published bi-weekly in Madison, Wisconsin beginning on March 1, 1957. Its founders and editors were Robert S. Gabriner and Stuart Ewen. The newspaper was a member of the Underground Press Syndicate (UPS). It featured articles reprinted from other UPS newspapers as well as original contributions from the staff and the Madison community. The last issue appeared on May 6, 1968.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of general correspondence, correspondence with the Underground Press Syndicate, administrative papers, articles and drawings, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous materials. The material is arranged chronologically within each section. If dates could not be ascertained for the materials in a section, the original order, imposed by the creator of the papers, has been retained.
The general correspondence includes requests for sample copies and subscriptions to Connections, requests from distributors, letters to the editor, requests for information, and suggestions for articles. The correspondence with the Underground Press Syndicate includes releases from UPS, letters from other UPS members, and reprinting agreements.
The administrative papers consist of staff memos, a proposed budget (September 1, 1967), proposed administrative reform, and a list of sample copies sent.
The collection also includes various articles and drawings submitted to Connections, eleven newspaper articles concerning Connections, and miscellaneous items, which consist of an organizer's manual for Beloit, a survey of Dane County jail and detention facilities, and diverse leaflets relating to political and social action.
Arrangement of the Materials
This collection was received in multiple parts from the donor(s) and is organized into 2 major parts. These materials have not been physically interfiled and researchers might need to consult more than one part to locate similar materials.
