Biography/History

The Wisconsin Association of School Boards was founded in 1919 “to provide a center for meeting and communicating among members of boards of education, to foster cooperation among them, and to promote educational interests.” The group's main activities are lobbying with the state legislature and serving as an information source for members. Membership is open to any school board in the state, with dues graduated according to each school district's population.

The Association is managed by a nine-member board of directors and officers elected by the Board. In addition, the board appoints an editor for their official publication, Wisconsin School Board News. A second publication, Legislative Bulletin, is put out during Wisconsin legislative sessions.

Scope and Content Note

The Records, 1942-1955, of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards contain bylaws, correspondence, convention materials, membership lists, informational reports on teacher salaries and other topics, and treasurers' reports. General correspondence makes up the largest portion of the collection and consists primarily of letters between members of the board, officers, and members of the Association concerning membership, committee assignments, meetings, and policy matters. Other correspondence concerns the Joint Committee on Education which the Association joined in 1943, the National School Boards Association, and the Wisconsin Association of School Administrators with whom they often held joint meetings.
