Scope and Content Note

Two boxes pertain to the work of the American Jewish Congress. These papers include information on campaigns to boycott German products in 1933 and the Olympic Games in 1936, and to promote other anti-Nazi measures; on cooperation with other Jewish organizations; on World War II relief programs; and on internal conflicts within the Milwaukee Group. An additional box contains records of the Milwaukee Jewish Council, 1939-1947, Poale Zion of Milwaukee, 1939-1947, Bank Hapoalim, 1937-1940, as well as scattered papers, 1914-1947, relating to Milwaukee Jewish groups interested in labor, youth, veterans, and inter-racial relations. A scrapbook contains letters, clippings, and memorabilia describing Sand's work in the Jewish community. One folder of unbound business papers concerns the operation of Sand's insurance agency in the 1940s. The photographs in the collection are from the Poale Zion, the Yiddish-speaking party of the Labor Zionists in Milwaukee. Included are images from a 1919 Americanization Pageant held in Milwaukee at which the local Poale Zion presented a tableaux of scenes from Jewish history. Golda Mabovitz Meyerson (Golda Meir) was a participant in the tableaux.
